Kumiko
This past weekend I attended a one-day woodworking course. The program was focused around Kumiko: the Japanese style of creating panels made up of intricate lattices following specific designs, with no nails involved. The more and more time that has passed since, the more and more I have been thinking about it. I remember heading off for my relatively short lunch break, in dismay with my foundational panel as my cuts were not precise enough. I returned, told my instructor, who then reassured me that if I kept going and adding more pieces - it could work itself out. I was the youngest and the slowest in that class, but I still walked out with a finished coaster.
I remember seeing some fun fact on TikTok or the like, stating that wood is rarer than diamonds - significantly so. It is. How fantastic is that! As I was reading my copy of The Conclave by Robert Harris last night, it occurred to me that Jesus was a carpenter. I like that.
When I was still in school I had a class that involved a big workshop and at times, woodworking. I would like it to be part of my polymathy map. Still not sure how I will define, discover or build my repertoire of disciplines. But I do know this is one I would like to keep up.
